Poster Design

Objective:

Design a series of “history studies” or, posters that reflects how I perceive my Mexican-American identity. These posters were designed in Spanish and then translated to English by myself.

This work was on display at the 2018 Kansas City Flatfile & Digital File Exhibition at the H&R Block Artspace.

Solution:

These “history studies” or, posters are an exploration of my Mexican identity. The series is created to be both informative and expressive. The compositions, colors, typography and design elements are designed with systems created by the ideas where I reflect on my own life through history, genetics, social position, and personal narrative. I am analyzing my [our] past in a way that could describe what I [we] feel today. The work celebrates duality and contrast, the way we culturally respect both life and death. Our history is a constant battle between opposites, but through that chaos, we hope to create a better future.

The first poster describes the beginning of the Mexico we know today, which was a battle between the Native Indigenous population and the Spanish colonizers. Like the cracking of an atom this clash reformed a landscape that is hostile and unstable, but it also gave the birth of something new; being everything I know today.

The second poster describes the long dance of power throughout Mexico’s early history. This poster is the most informational by showing a detailed history of all the transitions of power in Mexico from 1811 to 1946 when the ruling PRI party was formed. This instability and insecurity that lasted over a century lays down the foundation of Mexico’s current political and economic landscape that is filled with deadly corruption.

Lastly, the third poster shows that despite the hostile environment from which we come from, we remain optimistic and faithful to our pursuit of happiness. Like our indigenous ancestors, we are not afraid to sacrifice ourselves today so that the sun may rise tomorrow. Through our endless fight, we come to appreciate the duality of life. Mexicans celebrate both life and death because we know all too well that one cannot exist without the other.
